Some notes on Heian Nidan (平安二段)

I provide the names of techniques as well as their numbers according to the book of Nakayama Masatoshi "Best Karate. Vol. 5. Heian, Tekki". Kodansha International, 1979. If some other names are used, then the source is provided.

1. hidari haiwan hidari sokumen jôdan yoko uke, migi zenwan hitai mae yoko kamae - the arm techniques have to be finished simultaneously with the step to kôkutsu dachi. The left arm and the right forearm are parallel to the ground, the left forearm is perpendicular to the ground. Thus, the left fist is higher then the right fist.

2. migi kentsui hidari sokumen uchi komi, hidari tekubi nagashi uke - turn the body to the left, while maintaing correct kôkutsu dachi.

3. hidari ken hidari sokumen chûdan zuki, migi ken migi koshi kamae - punch to the left, the right elbow is pointed backwards, not to the right.

4. migi haiwan migi sokumen jôdan yoko uke, hidari zenwan hitai mae yoko kamae - the arm techniques have to be finished simultaneously with the step to kôkutsu dachi. The right arm and the left forearm are parallel to the ground, the right forearm is perpendicular to the ground. Thus, the right fist is higher then the left fist.

5. hidari kentsui hidari sokumen uchi komi, migi tekubi nagashi uke - turn the body to the right, while maintaing correct kôkutsu dachi.

6. migi ken hidari sokumen chûdan zuki, hidari ken migi koshi kamae - punch to the right, the left elbow is pointed backwards, not to the left.

7a. hidari ken ue migi ken - first, move the left leg half-distance in the direction of the right leg, while the position of the body and arms and the direction of the sight remain the same. When doing this move, turn the left foot more inside, so that the following move could be done easier and smoother. Then lift up the knee and put both fist on the left hip. When doing this move, complete the turn of the left foot so that it is now positioned well for the upcoming kick. Don't open the hips yet, otherwise the upcoming kick will be weaker.

7b. migi uraken jôdan yoko mawashi uchi, migi sokuto yoko keage - do both techniques simultaneously.

8. hidari shutô uke, migi shutô suigetsu mae kamae - first the preparation for the block is done with arms and turn of the upper body, then the hips are turned into kôkutsu dachi together with block. Don't turn the hips in advance, before executing the block.

11. migi shihon nukite chûdan tate zuki, hidari shô osae uke - the block has to be strong, and after coming downwards it has to be kept pressing downwards and forwards. Don't let the left hand become soft and powerless while performing the strike. Remember bunkai: the block has to stop an attack, don't pull an opponent's hand to yourself.

12. hidari shutô uke - be precise with the directions of steps in the techniques 12-15.

16. migi chûdan uchi uke, gyaku hanmi - when making transition from technique 15 to technique 16 don't pull the weight back to the right foot and then forwards, but move the left foot diagonally backwards (backwards and to the left) and then step forwards strongly into zenkutsu dachi, hips are in gyaku hanmi.

17. migi mae keage - don't go upwards with the kick.

18. hidari ken chûdan gyaku zuki - punch simultaneously with the step into zenkutsu dachi, turning the hips into shomen.

19. hidari chûdan uchi uke - the right foot goes a little bit backwards together with turning the hips into gyaku hanmi. Don't turn the hips into gyaku hanmi together with the preparation for the block, do it together with the block itself.

20. hidari mae keage - don't go upwards with the kick.

21. migi ken chûdan gyaku zuki - punch simultaneously with the step into zenkutsu dachi, turning the hips into shomen.

22. migi chûdan morote uke (migi chûdan uchi ukie / hidari ken migi empi yoko zoe - do the preparation for the block fast enough to finish the block itself together with the step into zenkutsu dachi. The left fist strongly supports the right elbow.

23. hidari gedan barai - be precise with the directions of steps in the techniques 23-26.

24. migi jôdan age uke - don't make the preparation move for the block before starting the step.
